Report 2012

Natura 2000 Network

Designation SPA designation in Finland is acceptable overall, but some important terrestrial sites are missing such as Suomenoja wetland.

Some sites with high biodiversity values are not included in the SPA network because of their artificial or man-made origin.

Conservation

Conservation actions are still pending in many sites. Management plans are missing for half of the sites and the quality of management plans is generally low.

Plans are not based on the species level conservation objectives or needs like they should. The implementation rate of the plans is also low.

Inland wetlands are suffering most from the lack of management.

Financing

There is a substantial lack of funding on purchase, management and monitoring of the SPAs.

Estimated lack of funding on management, restoration and monitoring is about 15 mill. EUR per year.

The lack of funding is a reason why conservation needs have mostly been left out of the management plans and the conservation regulations of sites.
