Key biodiversity topics

Progress assessment on selected topics

  • Impact of EU-subsidies:

At this time 5 LIFE+ projects for Nature Conservation are implemented in Romania and others have been completed or been submitted. All these projects are related to species/habitats from Natura 2000 sites.

Also, Romania started to apply agro-environment measures for 3 bird species: Red-footed Falcon, Red-Backed Shrike and Corncrake. Other agro-environment measures were developed for 2 bird species: Red-breasted Goose and Lesser-spotted Eagle and accepted by the Ministry of Agriculture. Special support is being targeted to HNV farming.

  • Threats from a specific sector: A chaotic wind rush threatens protected sites and species

Since 2007, more than 8000 wind turbines have been proposed to be developed in Romania, 5000 of these in the Dobrogea region (~ 500 turbines built), 15% of them are inside Natura 2000 and around 50 % are in the vicinities. Wind energy in Dobrogea is chaotically developed, without any Strategic Environmental Assessment at regional or national level. Each individual project has a very low quality environmental impact assessment. These aspects are affecting protected species and their habitats/priority habitats.
