BirdLife International is a global Partnership of independent national non-governmental organisations (NGOs) from more than 100 countries. We work together to safeguard the environment and develop ways of managing natural resources sustainably.

We are a powerful force for change: BirdLife Partners have a combined membership of more than 2.5 million people, and manage more than 1 million hectares of the planet's richest wildlife habitat (an area roughly equivalent to The Gambia, or the state of Connecticut).

We bring organisations together to exchange and share a range of skills and experience, so making an important contribution to civil society by strengthening the governance of each organisation. We have established programmes in countries with little or no tradition of democracy. Some of these initiatives have evolved into independent NGOs. We have a small, co-ordinating Secretariat with offices in Belgium, Ecuador, Indonesia, Japan, Jordan, Kenya, the Netherlands and the UK.

We recognise that it is vital to integrate environmental conservation with social development and livelihood security. Projects in some of the world's most important areas for biological diversity help communities to achieve sustainable livelihoods through the managed use of natural resources, so increasing economic growth and reducing social inequalities. We promote dialogue between stakeholders at all levels of society, enabling local people to express their views and needs directly to decision-makers.
