Population justification: Brooke (2004) estimated the global population to number > c.20,000,000 individuals, while national population sizes have been estimated at c.100-10,000 breeding pairs and c.50-1,000 individuals on migration in Japan and c.10,000-100,000 breeding pairs and c.1,000-10,000 individuals on migration in Russia (Brazil 2009).
Trend justification: There is no reason to suppose the overall population is undergoing rapid change at present (Brooke 2004).
