Population justification: In Europe (which covers >95% of the breeding range), the breeding population is estimated to be 14,000-19,000 breeding pairs, equating to 42,000-57,000 individuals (BirdLife International 2004).
Trend justification: Although this species may have undergone a decline, recent annual counts in Israel suggest the population has recovered to some extent in recent years (D. Alon in litt. 2006).
