Sibley, C. G.; Monroe, B. L. 1990. Distribution and taxonomy of birds of the world. Yale University Press, New Haven, USA.
Alcedo cristata, A. vintsioides and A. thomensis (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include vintsioides and thomensis as subspecies of A. cristata. Alcedo cristata, A. thomensis and A. nais (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into A. cristata following Melo and Fuchs (2008) who provide morphological and phylogenetic evidence in support of this treatment and demostrate that nais shares no affinity with A. leucogaster with which it has been treated as conspecific.
