| 2009 IUCN Red List Category (as evaluated by BirdLife International - the official Red List Authority for birds for IUCN): Near Threatened Justification This poorly known and apprantely highly localised species is thought to have a moderately small population and range which may be declining owing to habitat loss; it therefore is classified as Near Threatened. If it was found to be more widespread than currently known it may be downlisted.
Family/Sub-family Ptilonorhynchidae Species name author Rand, 1940 Taxonomic source(s) Frith et al. (1995) Taxonomic note Archboldia papuensis and A. sanfordi (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into A. papuensis following Frith et al. (1995).

Range & population Archboldia papuensis is very patchily distributed in the Central Ranges of New Guinea, from the Weyland Mountains of Papua (formerly Irian Jaya), Indonesia, to the highlands provinces of Papua New Guinea. It is generally rare but locally moderately common.
Ecology: It inhabits high altitude forests, often with Pandanus on high frost-disturbed plateaux from 2,300-3,660 m, rarely as low as 1,750 m 2,3.
Threats Sub-population sizes and inter-site dispersal is unknown; it may be at risk of population fragmentation5. It is threatened by logging on two mountains in its tiny range of only c.800 km2 in Papua New Guinea1,4 but the larger Papuan populations are judged to be safe.
| Conservation measures underway None is known.
| Conservation measures proposed Monitor populations in the locations where it is known to occur. Survey to discover additional populations. Protect forest at sites where it occurs.
