| 2009 IUCN Red List Category (as evaluated by BirdLife International - the official Red List Authority for birds for IUCN): Extinct Family/Sub-family Psittacidae Species name author (Owen, 1866) Taxonomic source(s) Brooks (2000) |
Summary Lophopsittacus mauritianus is known from numerous bones and travellers' reports and sketches from Mauritius2. Hoffman, writing in 1680 based on observations in 1673-1675, gave the last definite reports of the species1.
Ecology: There is very little known, although it is likely to have been a forest species and its heavy bill indicates it specialised on large nuts.
Threats Birds were large and were poor fliers (but not flightless3) and consequently heavily hunted1 and this is likely to have caused its extinction.
