EX Norfolk Island Kaka  Nestor productus

2009 IUCN Red List Category (as evaluated by BirdLife International - the official Red List Authority for birds for IUCN): Extinct

Family/Sub-family Psittacidae

Species name author (Gould, 1836)

Taxonomic source(s) Brooks (2000), Christidis and Boles (1994), Sibley and Monroe (1990, 1993)

Taxonomic note The taxon is occasionally regarded as conspecific with the threatened Kaka N. meridionalis from New Zealand1, but is generally given specific status2. N. norfolcensis is a synonym3.

Summary Nestor productus was endemic to Norfolk Island (to Australia) and adjacent Phillip Island2. It became extinct in the wild in the early 19th century2. The last recorded living bird was in captivity in London in 18512. At least seven specimens exist2.

Ecology: It inhabited rocks and treetops, and was seen feeding on blossoms.

Threats It was reportedly tame, and hence heavily hunted for food by convicts and early settlers and easily trapped as a pet.
