Site description A freshwater lake, bounded in the north by the dyke of Zuidelijk Flevoland polder (reclaimed in 1968) and in the south by the mainland. The site is connected to Lake Markermeer (038) in the west and to Lake Eemmeer (045) in the east. There are extensive though narrow reedbeds along the mainland coast. The site includes a grassland polder east of the city of Naarden.

Protection status National Partial International Partial15 ha of IBA covered by Natural Monument (Gooikust bij Naarden, 15 ha). 65 ha of IBA covered by Natural Monument (Gooikust bij Naarden II, 65 ha). 400 ha of IBA covered by Natural Monument (Gooimeer, 400 ha). 178 ha of IBA covered by Nature Reserve (Gooimeer, 178 ha). 490 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Eemmeer, Gooimeer en IJmeer, 1,800 ha).

Conservation issues The main problems are over-fishing and entanglement in fishing nets, disturbance (by recreation), and nutrient pollution (but water quality is improving). The SPA also includes Eemmeer (045) and a minor part of Markermeer (038).
