Ornithological information The IBA is important for breeding wetland birds, and is a migratory bottleneck site, where up to 10,000 Grus grus regularly pass in spring. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Haliaeetus albicilla (3-5 passage birds), Crex crex (1-2 breeding pairs), Gallinago media (5-20 passage birds).

Site description A shallow calcareous lake that has undergone extensive restoration work over the last five years, involving water-level management. The lake's surroundings are mainly cultivated or cattle-grazed, although there are some forested areas. More than 100,000 people visit the lake each year.

IBA overlaps with another Nature Reserve (4,124 ha). 110 ha of IBA covered by Bird Sanctuary (Bjurum-Dagsnäs, 110 ha). 6,350 ha of IBA covered by Ramsar Site (Hornborgasjön, 6,370 ha). IBA overlaps with Special Protection Area.
