Site description This site consists of an endorheic lake and surrounding habitat south of the town of Nyala, at the mouth of Wadi Ibra, the effluents of which drain the southern slopes of the Jebel Marra. Although the lake is permanent it contracts to c.100–200 ha in the dry season when the maximum depth is reduced from 3 m to 2 m. The vegetation of the lake includes water-lilies and submerged aquatics including Ceratophyllum demersum and Najas pectinata.

Key Biodiversity See Box and Table 2 for key species. The site is important for waterfowl: a total count of 20,795 was made in 1993, comprising 22 species of waterbird including Sarkidiornis melanotos and Plectropterus gambensis. Haliaeetus vocifer also occurs.
