Site description This is an area north of the town of Atâr. It consists of a series of rocky outcrops and cliffs on a broad plain on the northern edge of the Adrar plateau. There are many wells on the plain as well as a large sand-filled wadi. Birds find shelter on the rocky ledges of the cliffs and amongst the shrubs and larger tree species. The vegetation typical of the area includes Phoenix dactylifera, Hyoscyamus muticus, Tamarix sp., Acacia raddiana, Capparis decidua, Leptadenia pyrotechnica, Maerua crassifolia, Salvadora persica, Balanites aegyptiaca, Panicum turgidum and Stipagrostis pungens. Many of these species are valued by nomadic herders for their grazing and browsing potential.
