BirdLife Cyprus

Summary This extensive site follows the open valley dominated by shrubland and low-intensity farmland of the Xeros River from near the river’s source in Pafos forest through Hannoutaris Cliffs and just before it spills into Pafos plain. This is the most important of the valley IBAs, with a long catalogue of qualifying species including three species of global conservation concern: breeding Rollers, and migrating Pallid Harriers and Red-footed Falcons. It is an Endemic Bird Area site, with significant populations of the endemic Cyprus Wheatear and Cyprus Warbler.

Site description The reservoir was formed following the damming of the River Xeros, and is surrounded mainly by rough grassland (used for goat- and sheep-grazing) and arable land planted with cash crops. Small pools of water and reeds Phragmites are located under the dam wall. Constructed in 1982, this is the second largest reservoir in Cyprus with a capacity of 51 million m3 of water.

Key Biodiversity The site attracts a variety of passage and overwintering waterbirds, waders, raptors and passerines.
