Summary A hilly area in the northern foothills of the Alps with lakes, bogs, villages, extensive woodlands, alpine meadows and karst mountains. An important site for species associated with subalpine forests. The main threat is from recreational activities.

Site description Das IBA befindet sich hauptsächlich in den nördlichen Voralpen des Kantons Schwyz. Es reicht im Nordwesten bis zum Hochmoor von Rothenthurm und bezieht das Alptal, die Ybrig-Region und im Osten den Grossen Aubrig mit ein. Dieser hügelige Teil des IBA «Schwyzer Randalpen» weist in den tieferen Lagen bedeutende Moorlandschaften auf (Rothenthurm, Altberg, Sihlebene). In der montanen Zone wechseln sich Weiden, Wälder und kleinere Siedlungen ab. Mischwälder mit der dominierenden Buche steigen bis etwa 1200 m, darüber schliesst Nadelwald an. In den unteren Regionen ist die Weisstanne häufig, an der oberen Waldgrenze herrscht der subalpine Fichtenwald vor. Oberhalb etwa 1700 m geht der Wald zurück und ausgedehnte alpine Rasen treten an seine Stelle. Der Hoch-Ybrig mit Druesberg trennt mit seinen Felsregionen den nördlicheren vom südlicheren Teil des IBAs mit den Regionen der Silberen – Bödmeren bis Glattalp. Eine ausgedehnte Karstlandschaft prägt hier das Bild.

Key Biodiversity Das IBA «Schwyzer Randalpen» beherbergt eine typische Vogelgemeinschaft der nördlichen Voralpen. Vogelarten des subalpinen Fichtenwaldes erreichen hohe Dichten: Dreizehenspecht, Ringdrossel und Zitronengirlitz. In den ungestörten Bereichen finden Birkhühner geeignete Lebensräume. Im südlichen und felsigeren Teil kommen Arten des eurasisch hoch-montanen (alpinen) Bioms hinzu wie Alpenbraunelle, Alpendohle und Schneesperling. Der Steinrötel brütet ebenfalls in einigen Paaren.
