Site description Das IBA «Piora – Dötra» umfasst drei alpine Täler in der Lukmanierregion, welche durch Wasserscheiden voneinander getrennt sind: Val Piora, Valle Santa Maria und Val Cadlimo. Das ganze Gebiet ist sehr abwechslungsreich und zeichnet sich aus durch eine Vielzahl von artenreichen Bergwiesen und Weiden mit Baum- und Gebüschgruppen, Bergwäldern, Kleingewässern, Mooren, Blockschutthalden und Felsregionen. In den Wäldern dominieren Lärchen, Arven und Fichten, in den oberen Waldregionen zusätzlich die Bergföhre. Klimatisch steht das Gebiet sowohl unter nordalpinem wie unter mediterranem Einfluss. Val Piora: Von Ost nach West verlaufendes Tal mit einigen grösseren Bergseen (z.B. Lago Ritóm), alpinen Rasen und felsigen Regionen. Valle Santa Maria: West-Ost-Tal mit kleineren Siedlungen (z.B. Dötra), traditionellem Landbau und artenreichen Heuwiesen. Die Hänge in den tieferen Lagen sind bewaldet, in den höheren befinden sich alpine Rasen und Felsen. Val Cadlimo: Hochalpines Tal, welches zum Einzugsgebiet des Vorderrheins gehört.
