Summary A mountainous area with alpine meadows dominant at higher elevations and natural coniferous forest, interspersed with bogs and pastures at lower altitudes. An important site for species associated with subalpine forest. The main threat is from recreational activities.

Site description Zwei Bergzüge begrenzen das IBA «Augstmatthorn – Hohgant» und schliessen dazwischen eine niedrigere Bergregion ein. Im Nordwesten liegen Hohgant und Schrattenflue, im Südosten bildet die Brienzer Rothornkette mit dem Augstmatthorn die Grenze. Beide Gebirgsketten weisen ab etwa 1200 m ü. M. subalpinen Fichtenwald auf, darüber schliessen alpine Kalkrasen und felsige Regionen an. In den tieferen Lagen zwischen Habkern im Westen und Sörenberg im Osten wechseln artenreiche Heuwiesen, ausgedehnte Weiden und Fichtenwälder miteinander ab. Wesentliche Teile des Gebietes gehören zur Moorlandschaft Habkern/Sörenberg mit zahlreichen Flach- und Hochmooren von nationaler Bedeutung.
