Sites - Important Bird Areas (IBAs)

Summary An area of the Jura mountains with open valleys, containing extensive raised bogs and wet meadows, and extensive subalpine forest on the slopes. An important site for breeding raptors, particularly Black Kite, Red Kite and Common Kestrel, and species associated with subalpine conifer forest. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Corncrake. One of the main threats is agricultural intensification in bog areas. The site is included in a Corncrake conservation project and mowing has been delayed in some sites.

Ornithological information Die Region besitzt für Greifvögel eine grosse Bedeutung. So brüten Turmfalke, Rot- und Schwarzmilan in grosser Zahl. Zudem kommt der Gartenrotschwanz in guter Dichte vor, so besonders in Les Brenets. Die Wälder bieten Lebensraum für viele Brutpaare von Grünspecht, Ringdrossel und Zitronengirlitz. Rufende Männchen des Wachtelkönigs werden fast alljährlich in der Ebene von La Sagne bis Les Ponts-de-Martel und in der Vallée de La Brévine festgestellt.

Site description Das Gebiet liegt im Neuenburger Jura und reicht bis zur französischen Landesgrenze. Es umfasst drei Juraketten und die beiden dazwischen liegenden breiteren Täler: La Sagne bis Les Ponts-de-Martel und La Chaux-de-Fonds bis La Brévine. Beide Ebenen weisen grössere Hoch- und Flachmoorkomplexe (Les Ponts-de-Martel, La Brévine), Weiden und ausgedehnte feuchte und extensiv genutzte Wiesen auf. Die Ebenen sind weitgehend strukturfrei und offen, kleinere Dörfer und Bauernhöfe befinden sich am Rand der Talböden. Zwei kleine Städte (La Chaux-de-Fonds, Le Locle) liegen ebenfalls innerhalb des IBAs. Die Nordhänge der Juraketten sind hauptsächlich von subalpinem Fichtenwald bedeckt, im Gegensatz dazu dominieren an den Südhängen Laubhölzer. Auf den Jurahöhen ist der Fichtenwald als Rinder- und Pferdeweide stark aufgelockert. Den höchsten Punkt des IBAs bildet der Mont Racine mit 1439 m ü.M.

Management considerations Die Moorlandschaft von Les Ponts-de-Martel ist teilweise stark degradiert, der Torf wurde in früherer Zeit stellenweise meterdick abgetragen und verbleibende Hochmoorfragmente verbuschen teilweise. Freizeitdruck und illegal erstellte Bauten bedrängen hier die Moorlandschaft. Auch die übrigen Moorlandschaften sind teilweise degradiert und weiterer Intensivierung und Nutzung ausgesetzt.
