Ornithological information An important site for breeding and passage waterbirds, holding 20,000 or more individuals on a regular basis. During autumn and early spring this is the most important roosting site in Slovakia for Circus cyaneus (150-200 individuals). Porzana parva, Recurvirostra avosetta, Limosa limosa, Chlidonias niger and Locustella luscinioides also breed. Breeding species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Aythya nyroca (2-4 pairs), Crex crex (5 pairs).

Site description An open, low-lying area that comprises 27 fish-ponds of varying size, wet meadows, pasture and arable fields interspersed with water canals, bushes and solitary trees. The largest fish-pond contains three islets covered in dense Salix scrub and other ruderal vegetation.

Management considerations The activities of anglers and photographers cause disturbance to birds, and wildfowl hunting is also a problem. A reduction in the intensity of fish production and a consequent decrease in the size of the benthic community have led to rapid declines in the number of breeding and passage waterbirds using the site. Conservation activities include protecting Recurvirostra avosetta nesting sites, managing meadows, dykes and islets through scrub and ruderal vegetation removal, and influencing agricultural and fisheries practices. A management plan exists for part of the National Nature Reserve.
