Site description The 150-km-long and up to 4-km-wide Danube flood-plain lies adjacent to the Hungarian border. The IBA covers the inundation zone of the river, numerous backwaters, oxbow lakes and islets, water-fringe vegetation, reedbed (Phragmites) and flood-plain forest (mainly Populus, Fraxinus, Salix and Ulmus). Forestry and water transport are the main land-uses, although tourism is likely to impact upon the area in the future.

Key Biodiversity An important site for breeding species of flood-plain forests and other riverine habitats, and as a stop-over site for migrating waterbirds˜holding more than 20,000 individuals on a regular basis. Nycticorax nycticorax, Ciconia nigra, Pernis apivorus and Recurvirostra avosetta also breed. Breeding species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Aythya nyroca (1-5 pairs), Haliaeetus albicilla and Crex crex (1-2 pairs).
