Ornithological information  Se han realizado varios estudios ornitológicos, principalmente en Abra Patricia, en 1998 por Hornbuckle (1999) y en la zona de La Morada y La Rivera (Samamé et al. 1999). Louisiana State University ha conducido inventarios extensos en la zona en 1976, 2002 y 2003. Las especies que destacan en esta IBA son Grallaricula ochraceifrons, Heliangelus regalis, Herpsilochmus parkeri, Picumnus steindachneri, Poecilotriccus luluae y Xenoglaux loweryi.

Site description Esta IBA se sitúa entre la provincia de Bongará en el departamento de Amazonas y las provincias de Rioja y Moyobamba en el departamento de San Martin. Incluye totalmente al Bosque de Protección Alto Mayo (182.000 has). La superficie restante se localiza al oeste de esta área protegida, hacia la parte alta de la cuenca del río Nieva, donde existe un área de conservación Privada propiedad de ECOAN. Esta IBA se encuentra en la Ecoregión de las Yungas peruanas y los hábitats principales son bosques montanos maduros, bosques enanos y bosques secundarios. Existen además zonas con sembríos y extensas zonas quemadas. La flora ha sido estudiada con bastante detalle entre 1994 y 2001 (Dillon y Sánchez 2003).
