Site description La Reserva Paisajística de la Subcuenca del río Cotahuasi es un área protegida que forma parte del SINANPE y fue establecida como tal en mayo del 2005. Se ubica en la provincia de La Unión, departamento de Arequipa, a 400 km al noroeste de esta ciudad, colindando con Ayacucho, Apurímac y Cusco. Se caracteriza por presentar matorrales de ladera combinados con una diversidad de hábitats que van desde desiertos con cactáceas columnares, hasta los únicos bosques altoandinos (Polylepis principalmente) húmedos de esta región del país. Tiene una topografía muy accidentada pues el río Cotahuasi forma el cañón más profundo del mundo con 3.354 m desde la base del nevado Solimana hasta el lecho del río. La actividad principal de la cuenca es la agricultura. La ganadería se realiza en forma extensiva, sobre todo de camélidos en la puna, que corresponde a más del 50 % del territorio.
