Ornithological information One of the most important wintering sites for waterbirds in France. The site holds 20,000 or more waterbirds on passage and in winter, on a regular basis.

Site description A bay with saltwater marshes and mudflats, ponds, wet meadows with ditches, woodland, grassland, and arable land.

Management considerations The site is threatened by drainage, cultivation and pressure from tourism (mostly on Oléron island). Pressure from hunting, including hunting at night, is also high.

Protection status National Partial International Partial6,714 ha of IBA covered by Nature Reserve (Réserve Naturelle de Moëze, 6,714 ha). 15,233 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Ile d'Oléron, Marais de Brouage: Saint-Agnant, 22,000 ha).
