Site description Dispostas ao longo de uma extensa planície, as reentrâncias costeiras ocidentais do Maranhão e da área litorânea adjacente do Pará são formadas por uma grande variedade de ambientes sob influência fluvial e marinha. Nesse complexo sistema, grandes extensões de manguezais intercalamse com pontões arenosos. A vegetação de mangue é bem desenvolvida, com algumas espécies atingindo 30 m de altura. Há também praias de areias brancas, dunas costeiras, falésias rochosas marinhas, lagos, restingas e brejos herbáceos de água doce, dispostos entre os diversos estuários e enseadas, em que se destacam algumas baías de grande porte, como Cumã, Gurupi, Maracanã e Turiaçú. O clima da região é quente e úmido, com temperaturas médias variando entre 25–26ºC e pluviosidade anual de 2.400 a 2.900 mm. Existem registros do ameaçado peixe-boi-marinho (Trichechus manatus) na área.
