Site description Situada no litoral sul paulista, a pouco mais de 100 km da capital, a Estação Ecológica de Juréia-Itatins protege um dos maiores blocos de Mata Atlântica contínua ainda bem conservada no Estado de São Paulo. Uma das características mais marcantes da paisagem local é a existência de um gradiente altitudinal totalmente preservado, que começa nas praias, onde há vegetação típica de dunas, e estendese até as matas baixas e vegetação arbustiva sobre os topos dos morros, a mais de 1.000 m de altitude, passando por matas de restinga, mangues e florestas altas. A vegetação sobre as encostas, serras e morros isolados corresponde às florestas baixo-montana, montana e alto-montana, com pequenos trechos de campos de altitude nos cumes. Nas planícies, existem matas de restinga e manguezais, estes restritos às margens dos rios Una, Verde e Guaraú. Uma floresta exuberante e extremamente diversa em número de espécies e formas de vida desenvolve-se nas áreas de menor altitude, abaixo da cota de 300 m. Nessa áreas, a estratificação da vegetação é clara, originando três andares bem definidos. A altura das copas varia de 20 a 30 m, mas algumas árvores emergentes, como o jequitibá (Cariniana estrellensis), a copaíba (Copaifera trapezifolia) e o jatobá (Hymenaea courbaril), atingem até 40 m. Outras árvores comuns no dossel são o guapuruvu (Schizolobium parahyba), bocuva (Virola bicuhyba), várias figueiras (Ficus spp.), embiruçu (Eriotheca penthaphila), rameira (Didimopanax culvus) e canela (Cryptocarya moschata). Sobre estas árvores crescem numerosas epífitas das famílias Orquidaceae e Bromeliaceae, além de diversos tipos de lianas. O palmito (Euterpe edulis) é encontrado desde as restingas até as florestas no alto da serras, sendo a palmeira mais abundante em alguns trechos. Fora dos limites da estação ecológica existem outras áreas de vegetação nativa bem preservada, como o extenso trecho de mata de restinga ao longo da praia da Juréia, que se estende até a foz do rio Ribeira de Iguape, ao sul. O clima da região é classificado como tropical chuvoso. A precipitação anual ultrapassa 3.000 mm em anos muito úmidos, estando normalmente entre 2.400 e 2.900 mm na maior parte da área.
