Site description Ilhabela, também chamada de ilha de São Sebastião, é uma das maiores ilhas do litoral brasileiro, com 336 km2. Dista apenas 1,7 km do litoral do município de São Sebastião, em seu ponto mais próximo do continente. A ilha apresenta relevo bastante acidentado, tendo poucas áreas planas. O ponto culminante da ilha (pico de São Sebastião) é mais alto do que as encostas adjacentes da Serra do Mar, no continente. O clima é tropical úmido, com temperatura média de 22ºC e pluviosidade anual em torno de 1.350 mm. Mais de 80% da ilha estão incluídos no Parque Estadual de Ilhabela, que se estende desde o nível do mar (na baía de Castelhanos) até o topo dos morros. As áreas mais bem preservadas encontramse acima da cota de 500 m, onde predominam florestas primárias e secundárias tardias, com dossel variando entre 15 e 20 m de altura. Nessas matas, é abundante o taquaraçu (Guadua sp). Nas partes mais baixas, são comuns espécies vegetais características de matas degradadas, como o guapuruvu (Schizolobium parahyba) e Croton spp. (Euphorbiaceae). Em comparação com as matas do continente, a vegetação de Ilhabela é algo mais seca, havendo menor quantidade de epífitas. O palmito (Euterpe edulis), abundante no continente, não ocorre na ilha. As áreas de maior ocupação humana estão na face voltada para o continente, onde também está a sede do município. Atualmente, a população da ilha é de 14.000 habitantes, mas esse número aumenta consideravelmente durante a temporada de veraneio.
