Site description Abrangendo matas úmidas situadas sobre as encostas e no alto da escarpa atlântica, essa área corresponde em grande parte à porção central do Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar (Núcleo São Sebastião e vizinhanças), estendendo-se de Santos a São Sebastião e Caraguatatuba. Outras duas reservas pequenas situadas na transição entre a escarpa e o planalto são praticamente contíguas ao parque estadual e fazem parte do mesmo maciço florestal: a Estação Biológica de Boracéia, em Salesópolis, que pertence ao Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo, e a Reserva Biológica do Alto da Serra de Paranapiacaba, localizada em frente ao vale do rio Moji, em Santo André. De um modo geral, as matas da região encontram-se em bom estado de conservação, existindo um grande bloco florestal ainda razoavelmente contínuo entre Salesópolis e São Sebastião. Há, contudo, muitos trechos de matas degradadas com taquarais, florestas secundárias e capoeiras. No alto da serra existem pequenas campinas naturais em meio à floresta. As matas da planície de Bertioga não estão incluídas no P. E. da Serra do Mar e compõem outra IBA (SP05).
