Site description Situada em plena Região Metropolitana de São Paulo, a apenas 10 km da Praça da Sé, a Cantareira é uma das maiores florestas tropicais urbanas do mundo. A vegetação é classificada com floresta pluvial montana. Árvores dos gêneros Vochysia, Cariniana, Ocotea e Nectandra estão entre as mais características do dossel, que possui altura média de 14 m. Alguns trechos da mata são dominados por touceiras de taquaras, pertencentes aos gêneros Guadua e Merostachys. Há também um bosque plantado de araucárias (Araucaria angustifolia), com cerca de 78 ha. A temperatura média na região é de 21,3ºC nos meses mais quentes e 14,7ºC nos meses mais frios. A pluviosidade anual está em torno de 1.570 mm, havendo um período chuvoso bem marcado entre outubro e março. A Serra da Cantareira, que pertence ao maciço da Mantiqueira, é um bom exemplo de como a vegetação natural pode se regenerar. No final do século XIX, a área era ocupada por chácaras produtoras de café e chá. Após a desapropriação pelo Estado, essas áreas se recuperaram, dando lugar à mata nativa. A Cantareira foi decretada reserva florestal em 1896 e, em 1963, passou à categoria de parque estadual. Atualmente, a área é dominada por matas secundárias e está isolada dos remanescentes de floresta primária mais próximos. Além de sua importância para a conservação da fauna e flora da Mata Atlântica, a Serra da Cantareira é um dos principais mananciais que abastecem a cidade de São Paulo.
