Site description Os conjuntos orográficos da Tijuca e da Pedra Branca formam um bloco isolado da Serra do Mar a oeste da baía da Guanabara. Ambos são revestidos por florestas úmidas de encosta, existindo certa conexão entre os dois maciços florestais, embora as unidades de conservação que os protegem não sejam contíguas. O Parque Nacional da Tijuca, considerado por muitos a maior floresta tropical urbana do mundo, está encravado no coração da metrópole do Rio de Janeiro e situa- se em uma área que já foi praticamente toda desmatada e ocupada por plantações de café, chá e cana-de-açúcar. As florestas hoje existentes, em avançado estádio de regeneração, são o resultado de um programa de reflorestamento iniciado em 1862. O Parque Estadual da Pedra Branca, por sua vez, está localizado na porção central do município, limitandose com vários bairros da zona oeste da capital e da baixada de Jacarepaguá. O parque compreende áreas de encosta acima da cota de 100 m de altitude e inclui o pico da Pedra Branca, ponto culminante do município, com 1.024 m. A exemplo do P. N. da Tijuca, essa área também foi em grande parte ocupada por plantações no passado, sendo formada hoje principalmente por florestas secundárias.
