Site description A Serra do Tinguá é adjacente à Serra dos Órgãos (RJ04), da qual é separada principalmente pela zona urbana de Petrópolis. Há, entretanto, alguma conexão florestal entre ambas através das matas existentes no norte do município de Magé e em áreas adjacentes de Petrópolis e Duque de Caxias. A Serra do Tinguá resguarda atualmente alguns dos melhores e mais extensos remanescentes de floresta primária de elevações intermediárias em todo o Estado do Rio de Janeiro, a maior parte concentrada acima de 500 m de altitude. Entre 40 e 750 m, predominam matas alteradas ou secundárias, entremeadas com áreas já desmatadas. A vegetação varia ao longo do gradiente de altitude, sendo classificada como floresta ombrófila densa submontana (50– 500 m), montana (acima de 500 m) e altomontana, ou mata de neblina (1.270– 1.600 m). Acima do limite das florestas existem campos de altitude. As duas unidades de conservação de proteção integral existentes na Serra do Tinguá são praticamente contíguas e protegem quase toda a floresta que resta na região, exceto alguns remanescentes de floresta de baixa altitude na transição para a baixada litorânea.
