Site description Murici está situada nos contrafortes orientais do Planalto da Borborema, a cerca de 40 km da costa, no nordeste de Alagoas. Compreende florestas semiúmidas de altitudes intermediárias, mantidas pelos ventos carregados de umidade que sopram a partir do oceano Atlântico. Entre as árvores mais comuns em Murici estão Byrsonima sericea (murici), Eschweilera ovata (embiriba), Didymopanax morototoni (sambacuim), Parkia pendula (visgueiro), Tapirira guianensis (cupiuba), Himathanthus phagaedenicus (banana-de-papagaio), Bowdichia virgilioides (sucupira) e Cupania platycarpa (cabotã). O hábitat remanescente é bastante limitado e fragmentado, estando atualmente concentrado em áreas de topografia acidentada. Em 2000 restavam pouco mais de 7.000 ha de florestas distribuídas em quatro blocos principais, o maior deles incluindo as fazendas Pedra Branca (localidade-tipo de Philydor novaesi, Myrmotherula snowi, Terenura sicki e Phylloscartes ceciliae) e Bananeiras. A Estação Ecológica de Murici, criada em 2001, protege parte da floresta remanescente na área e tem cerca de 50% de sua superfície ainda coberta por floresta.
