Site description The Podyjí IBA is a unique natural complex in southern Moravia at the Austrian border. The Dyje river cuts a deep valley in the rocky rim of the Èeskomoravská vrchovina uplands. The position at the border of two mountain ranges and two geographic regions influences the richness of the communities of flora and fauna there. The original forests have been preserved in most parts of the area. We can find acidophilous and temperate oakwoods, oak-hornbeam forests, submontane beechwoods, and alderwoods. Part of the upper plateau was logged and turned into arable land, meadows, and pastures. Some of them gained, thanks to burning, the characteristics of compact heathlands. The rocky valley is typical with its islkets of bare land - rocky outcroppings and slopes. The Dyje river is accompanied by riverine reedbeds, and locally even stands of willow shrubs. The floodplain forests were to a large extent changed into mowed floodplain meadows.
