Site description Gaoyou Hu is located 40 km north of Yangzhou City and west of Gaoyou City. The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal lies to the east of the lake. Gaoyu Hu lake receives water from several rivers and flows into Shaobo Hu. The shallow area of the lake is dominated by reeds, and there are extensive agricultural lands in the adjacent areas.

Conservation response This IBA includes the county-level Gaoyou Wetland Nature Reserve (4,667 ha, Gaoyou City) and the city-level Gaoyou Hu Northern Wetlands Nature Reserve (3,000 ha, Jinhu County), both of which were established in 2005.
