Site description Located in Sanmenxia City, north-west Henan Province. In winter, when the reservoir is storing water, it may extend for 100 km in length and be 5 km wide and the water can be up to 324 m in depth. In summer and autumn, when the water is released from the reservoir, it has a maximum width of 4 km and the shallow areas will be exposed.

Conservation response Established as a provincial-level nature reserve (19,544 ha) in 1995, the IBA is within Henan Yellow River Wetland National Nature Reserve (68,000 ha) which was established in 2003.
