Site description Located in the south-western part of Jiuzhaigou County. Jiuzhaigou is a mountain valley that extends for more than 40 km, with nine Tibetan villages in the vicinity. The river valley and the slopes are fully covered by dense forest, and there are 118 lakes along the valley. The vegetation shows prominent vertical zonation, with temperate coniferous forest (2,000-2,500 m), coniferous-broadleaf mixed forest (2,500-2,800 m), coniferous forest (2,800-3,500 m) and alpine scrub and grassland (above 3,500 m).

Other biodiversity Nationally protected animals include Ailurpoda melanolenca, Pygathrix roxellanae, Pseudois nayaur, Panthera pardus, Ailurus fulgens, Moschus berezovskii and Naemorhedus goral.
Conservation response Established as a national nature reserve (64,300 ha) in 1978. Jiuzhaigou was designated in 1992 as a ‘World Heritage Site’ under the World Heritage Convention, and in 1997 as a ‘Biosphere Reserve’ under UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme.
