Site description Located in Luqu County, with the border of Sichuan Province to the south. Ga Hai is a highland lake with c.5 km2 of open water area and an average depth of 2-3 m, which is fed by mountain streams and precipitation. The outflow from the lake is the Tao He river. The area has a sparse human population and animal husbandry is the main activity. Over-grazing has caused problems of desertification.

Conservation response Designated as a provincial-level nature reserve (34,000 ha) in 1982, and upgraded to a national nature reserve (247,431 ha) in 1997.
