Site description Located in the northern part of the Hengduan Shan mountains, along the Jinsha Jiang river (the upper reaches of the Yangtze River). The vegetation shows vertical zonation, with arid montane deciduous scrub below 3,400 m, Picea likiangensis forest on shaded slopes and Juniperus chinesis forest on sunny slopes at 3,200-3,900 m, and alpine scrub and grassland above 3,900 m.
