Site description Located along the border of Tongjiang and Fuyuan counties. This was the first nature reserve established in the Sanjiang wetlands. The forest patches provide breeding sites for Ciconia boyciana.

Other biodiversity Twenty-five mammal species have been recorded in the area, including seven that are nationally protected. Nationally protected plants include Phellodendron chinense, Fraxinus mandshurica and Juglans mandshurica.
Conservation response Established as a provincial-level nature reserve in 1984, upgraded to Honghe National Nature Reserve in 1996, and designated in 2002 as a ‘Wetland of International Importance’ (or Ramsar site) under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. There are no people resident in the reserve, and the biodiversity and natural environment are well preserved.
