Ornithological information Se conocen 360 especies de aves de esta cordillera. Varias especies amenazadas y endémicas forman parte de la avifauna, como por ejemplo Nothocercus nigrocapillus, Hapalopsittaca melanotis, Otus marshalli, Phlogophilus harterti, Andigena hypoglauca, Hemitriccus rufigularis y Myiotheretes fuscorufus. No existe información sobre sus poblaciones.

Site description La Cordillera Yanachaga, parte principal del Parque Nacional Yanachaga-Chemillén, es la más elevada de una serie de pequeñas cadenas montañosas separadas de la cordillera principal, al este de los Andes del Perú central, departamento de Pasco. En su lado oriental, estas montañas descienden hacia el valle del río Palcazu. La cuenca del río Huancabamba la separa de la cadena Santa Bárbara. La zona está cubierta de bosque montano, bosque de neblina y bosques secundarios. Por su ubicación dentro de un parque nacional, el uso del área está restringido y regulado. Actualmente trabajan en la conservación y manejo sostenible del área instituciones como INRENA, ProNaturaleza, TNC y PATS.

Other biodiversity Entre los mamíferos de mayor tamaño se ha reportado la presencia de Panthera onca (NT), Tremarctos ornatus (VU), Pudu mephistophiles (LR/nt) y Dinomys branickii (EN).

Management considerations La antigua presión sobre la zona, principalmente en forma de agricultura y tala de bosque, es controlada por las autoridades del Parque Nacional.

Protection status La cordillera Yanachaga se encuentra dentro del Parque Nacional Yanachaga-Chemillén, establecido en 1986 mediante Decreto Supremo Nº 068-86-AG.
