Sites - Important Bird Areas (IBAs)

Ornithological information Se han reportado 575 especies de aves, que incluyen especies amenazadas y endémicas. Esta zona es importante por la presencia de grandes lamederos (o saladeros) de guacamayos. No se dispone de información sobre las poblaciones.

Site description Tambopata-Candamo está ubicado en los departamentos de Madre de Dios (provincia de Tambopata) y Puno (provincias de Carabaya y Sandia). Cubre un área extensa al sur del río Madre de Dios, entre los ríos Heath y Tambopata. Al sureste de esta zona se encuentran los cerros del Tabarra. En su mayor parte, el hábitat está formado por bosque húmedo inundable, bosque de tierra firme, islas y bosques de galería. La zona tiene un uso intenso para turismo y recreación. Muchos proyectos de investigación de la zona son realizados por entidades privadas como Tambopata Research Center.

Notes: La extracción petrolifera es una actividad en la vecindad de la zona.

Other biodiversity Entre la fauna amenazada de la zona se ha reportado a Speothos venaticus (VU), Pteronura brasiliensis (EN) y Melanosuchus niger (LR/cd).

Management considerations La tala furtiva y las actividades de extracción de hidrocarburos son las principales amenazas para el lugar. Las actividades de ecoturismo son intensas y también ejerce presión sobre la zona.

Protection status Establecido en 1990 como Zona Reservada, desde 1996 Tambopata-Candamo es parte del Parque Nacional Bahuaja-Sonene.
