Ornithological information An important site for wetland birds and raptors.

Site description A permanently flooded area of flood-plain, c.30 km long and c.2-3 km wide, adjacent to the Bodrog and Tisza rivers. The high groundwater level results from the effects of the dam at Tiszalök. The area includes natural and artificial oxbow lakes, marshes, wet grasslands, flood-plain forests and several non-native poplar Populus plantations. Human activities include grazing, mowing, arable farming, angling and hunting.

Management considerations The main threats are the abandonment of land-management practices and the early cutting of hay, both of which have a detrimental effect on Crex crex numbers. Afforestation is another major threat, as grassland management is now considered to be uneconomic. Burning can destroy the nesting-sites of herons unless properly controlled. The enlargement of the existing LPA is in process.
