Site description A large wilderness of boreal forests and mires east of Kuhmo and adjacent to the Russian border. The main features are numerous hills with old coniferous and mixed forest, large mire complexes and riverside forests. A sizeable part of all `old' forests (more than 150 years) remaining in the Kainuu region exist here, and forests aged over 200 years are not uncommon.

Key Biodiversity An important breeding area for boreal avifauna. Breeding birds include 13 out of the 15 species in Europe that are restricted to the boreal biome (when breeding). The only known regular breeding area of Milvus migrans (1-5 pairs) in the country.

Population
Medium - based upon reliable but incomplete / partially representative data

Natural system modifications fire & fire suppression - increase in fire frequency/intensity past (and unlikely to return) and no longer limiting some of area/population (10-49%) slow but significant deterioration low
Over-exploitation, persecution and control of species hunting & collecting terrestrial animals - intentional use (species being assessed is the target) happening now majority/most of area/population (50-90%) slow but significant deterioration high

Lyrurus tetrix Black Grouse 50 15 breeding pairs 30 very unfavourable

Whole area of site (>90%) covered by appropriate conservation designation  A management plan exists but it is out of date or not comprehensive  Substantive conservation measures are being implemented but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity  medium
