Ornithological information An important breeding area for boreal birds including Tetrao urogallus (100-500 pairs).
Site description A large boreal area located east of Pielinen lake and adjacent to the Russian border. Ruunaa lake lies in the heart of the area and divides the site in two: to the east is a conservation and wilderness area, whilst to the west more recreational activities such as boating and fishing take place. There are many lakes within the site and a spectacular network of rivers and streams. Most of the land is covered by stands of dry Pinus sylvestris heath and numerous small bogs.
