Sites - Important Bird Areas (IBAs)

Site description An extensive area of forestry plantations, heathland, fen and sand-drifts, situated in the centre of the country. Forest stands consist mainly of conifers but with some deciduous/mixed woodland, and are of various ages and under various forestry regimes. The site is bordered in the south by the River Rhine and in the east by the valley of the River IJssel. Small villages are excluded from the site.

Management considerations The main problems are scrub encroachment (which is reducing the extent of heathland), infrastructural development (an expanding network of roads, cycle-paths and footpaths), and recreation (including hot-air balloons and mountain bikes).
