Ornithological information The average seasonal peak number of waterbirds during 1992-1996 was more than 20,000.
Site description A 22-km long stretch of the River Rhine (Rijn), close to Gelderse Poort (048), between the villages of Heteren and Amerongen (industry plants excluded). The site includes the river channel and surrounding flood-plain, the latter being mainly used for dairy farming, and is bounded by the winter dykes.

Management considerations The main threats are agricultural intensification (on the river forelands) and pollution by agricultural and industrial discharges.
