Ornithological information There are large roosts of Anser albifrons, the birds arriving from German and Dutch feeding areas (max. 100,000), but available counts underestimate the actual numbers.
Site description A 20-km long section of the River Rhine between Tolkamer (near the German border) and Arnhem (close to site 049) and a 12-km section of the River Waal between the branch of the Rhine and the city of Nijmegen (close to site 050). The site includes the riverbed, flood-plain, clay pits, and the inland subsites Oude Rijnstrangen (1,090 ha) and Ooijpolder (1,575 ha). Elsewhere the site is bounded by the winter dykes. Clay extraction occurs.

Management considerations The main problems are agricultural intensification (on the river forelands), disturbance (wildfowl hunting), the extension of the A15 motorway, and pollution by agricultural and industrial discharges. A scheme to compensate for restrictions on agricultural practices applies to part of the site.
