Eastern Arc Mountains and Coastal Forests of Kenya and Tanzania

This site seeks to consolidate and avail biodiversity data and information regarding the Eastern Arc Mountains and Coastal Forests of Kenya and Tanzania (hereafter referred to as EACF). The EACF comprises two distinct, but intrinsically linked habitats that follow the East African coast from the Somali to the Mozambican borders and stretch approximately 350 kilometers inland. This area was described as one of the original 25 biodiversity hotspots in 2000. However, in 2005, as additional data became available, the hotspots were reappraised and the total currently stands at 34 hotspots. The EACF now comprise part of the larger Eastern Afromontane, and Coastal Forests of Eastern Africa biodiversity hotspots, respectively.

Most of the information provided here regards the status, threats and conservation action of outcome sites (Key Biodiversity Areas), species (those listed as Globally Threatened in the IUCN Red List) and habitats in the EACF. Access to information is through links to major biodiversity databases and institutional websites.

This portal is developed by BirdLife International, Africa Partnership Secretariat as part of a project titled “Consolidating biodiversity data and information in the Eastern Arc Mountains and Coastal Forests of Kenya and Tanzania”. This project is funded by the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund, a joint program of l’Agence Française de Développement, Conservation International,  the European Union, the Global Environment Facility, the Government of Japan, the MacArthur Foundation and the World Bank. A fundamental goal is to ensure civil society is engaged in biodiversity conservation.

The project is in collaboration with Nature Kenya BirdLife Partner NGO in Kenya and the Birdlife International Tanzania Office and initially also with the Wildlife Conservation Society of Tanzania (WCST).
