General characteristics The breeding range of Yellow Bunting Emberiza sulphurata defines this Secondary Area. The species has a limited distribution largely in the lower mountains and highlands (600-1,500 m) of central Honshu (Japan), especially in the Mt Fuji/Hakone area and in the Japan Alps (see map, p. 454). The key habitat is deciduous and mixed forest, on wooded slopes and in high valleys. Although the species has been recorded elsewhere on Honshu, and on Hokkaido and Kyushu, it is not known to breed in these other areas (Brazil 1991), so these additional (assumed wintering) areas are not covered by this or by other Secondary Areas. There is some evidence that E. sulphurata has declined over the past hundred years (and it is consequently classed as Vulnerable), but the causes are unknown. |
