Sites - Important Bird Areas (IBAs)

General characteristics 

This Secondary Area is defined by the range of Chestnut-backed Laughingthrush Garrulax nuchalis, which is found in the lowlands and foothills of eastern Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Manipur in India, and in the upper Chindwin and Mali Hka watersheds in northern Myanmar (see map, p.418). It is found in dense scrub forest on broken ground, in rocky ravines and in tall grass from the foothills to 1,200m (King et al. 1975, Ali and Ripley 1987). Lowland forests are under considerable pressure in north-east India (Collins et al. 1991, Katti et al. 1992), but this species appears to be adaptable to secondary habitats and is therefore not considered to be threatened. There are several protected areas which could support populations of this species in north-east India, notably the large Namdapha National Park (see IUCN 1992c).
