General characteristics

The area around the Lualaba river and Lake Upemba in southern Zare is a Secondary Area, defined by the range of the threatened Black-lored Waxbill Estrilda nigriloris (classified as Vulnerable), a species found in level grassy plains with tall grass and bushes-though there have been no records of it since 1950. Much of the Secondary Area lies within Upemba National Park, but it is feared that the grassland there might well be being lost.
